SFI - Swedish for Immigrants - will give you a basic knowledge and understanding of the Swedish language. You will learn to speak, read and write in Swedish and also, use Swedish in your everyday life.  After you have completed the course, you will receive a certificate. All tuition is free of charge.

Who can study SFI?

  • You must be registered as a resident in the municipality of Varberg.
  • You must be 16 years old (as of 1 July in the same year).
  • You should not have any previous knowledge of Swedish.

If you are a citizen of an EU/EEA country or Switzerland, you must be in possession of a Swedish resident permit (allows you to work or study) and a resident in the municipality of Varberg.

Examination

If you fulfil the above requirements for studying SFI and have previous knowledge of Swedish, you have the possibility of taking an examination to test your knowledge without having to participate in the tuition. You can take the examination even if you already have a certificate from a previous SFI course. If you are currently studying SFI, the examination will not cost you anything.

Course times

SFI is a flexible course that allows you to study alongside your usual work, practical training or other courses. Some SFI schools offer intensive and distance learning courses. Under certain circumstances, for example, if you work on specific days of the week, you may be given a customised course schedule.

A daytime course in SFI typically involves 15 - 20 hours of studying a week. However, for an evening course in SFI, you will need to set aside around 6 hours a week.

Costs

The tuition and the books you need for the course will not cost you anything. However, you will have to pay for your own dictionaries, pens and notebooks. As an SFI student, you are not entitled to apply for a student grant.
